Prevent fear of the unknown, and either find peace-of-mind or disease to treat before your pet is sick. This is especially important because your pet can't really tell you how they are feeling. There are a variety of preventive laboratory tests, and a lot of information can be gathered from just a little urine, blood, and feces. Perform annual preventive laboratory screenings for your pet's birthday present, it helps justify spending the money and it's easier to remember the due date. Recommendations are as follows:

Puppies 1-6 months

Fecal test

Puppies 6-12 months

Fecal test

Blood test (heartworm)

Adults 1-7 years

Fecal test-every 6 months

Blood test (CBC/Chemistry, heartworm)-annually

Urinalysis-annually

Seniors 7+

Fecal test-every 6 months

Blood test (CBC/Chemistry, heartworm)-annually or biannually

Urinalysis (annually or biannually)

What do these tests tell us?

Fecal-intestinal parasites

Heartworm-heart parasite

CBC-complete blood count shows anemia, infection, inflammation, blood-borne cancers

Chemistry-abdominal organ disease

Urinalysis-urinary tract disease
