Portioning Pet Food: Accuracy is Key

Updated: Nov 15, 2019

Keeping your pet on a strict diet is no easy task, their adorable whiskered faces can manipulate even the most strict pet parents from time to time. However, your pet's fitness is absolutely essential for their health and happiness, so it's important to keep their diet consistent to avoid weight changes and tummy upset.

People portion their pet's food in a variety of ways for different reasons, but only two methods are recommended for perfectly portioning your pet's meals and snacks.

Recommended Methods

  1. Digital Kitchen Scales-the most accurate way to keep track of how much you are feeding your pet and how much they are eating.

  2. Portion Pro Rx-50% off right now-this is an amazing automated feeder that I highly recommend because I believe the pros greatly outweigh the cons for most pets. This feeder is the only convenient way to accurately* portion your pet's food and monitor their intake. This is definitely not as ideal as using a kitchen scale and monitoring each meal, but many lifestyles demand the conveniences this feeder offers. *portions are not accurate per individual meal but are over an average of 2-3 days and the feeder alerts you when you pet has gone 16 hours without going to the bowl.

Non-Recommended Methods

  • Free-feeding-otherwise known as keeping the bowl full, is convenient and easy, but its a sure-fire way to fatten up a pet. Some pets, particularly in single pet households, can maintain a healthy body condition being free-fed, but then there is no way to accurately determine if/how/when your pet is eating, which is important to monitor for their overall health.

  • Measuring cup- surprisingly, this method is incredibly inaccurate. Recent research by a veterinary university showed that most of the time we are overfeeding our pets, sometimes we are underfeeding them, and we rarely keep it consistent If you currently measuring your pet's food it would definitely be best to swap your cup for a kitchen scale.

  • Scoop-many people just use a scoop of some sort, which as know come in many shapes and sizes and does not provide for a way to measure food, maybe roughly guesstimate it at most.
